The duration of treatment varies depending on the severity of depression and personal needs. While 6–12 sessions may be sufficient for mild depression, this number may increase in more severe and chronic cases. The therapy plan is regularly reviewed as the individual's progress is monitored throughout the process.
In cases of moderate to severe depression, medication may be recommended in addition to psychotherapy. While medication helps alleviate symptoms, therapy addresses underlying thought and emotion patterns. When these two methods are used together, the recovery process can be more effective.
Inpatient treatment may be necessary in cases of suicidal thoughts, severe functional impairment, or severe depression that does not respond to treatment. This type of treatment offers more intensive and continuous support. If deemed necessary, a short-term hospital stay is important for the person's safety and recovery.
TMS (Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation) and ECT (Electroconvulsive Therapy) are generally considered for treatment-resistant depression when other treatments have failed. Both methods are administered to suitable candidates following specific medical evaluations. They are not suitable for everyone; the decision is made by a specialist physician.
Yes, depression can recur periodically in some people. The risk increases especially when the stress factors that caused previous episodes recur. However, the risk of recurrence can be reduced with regular follow-up, therapy, and lifestyle changes.
An understanding and supportive attitude from the family positively affects the recovery process. People who receive support may be more motivated to comply with treatment. However, it should not be forgotten that family support is not a substitute for professional treatment.
